I am, in theory, against the dehumanizing beheading of models. A feminist reading of media often holds that by sending our fantasies to the guillotine, we’re rendering them slavish, plastic objects of lust, rather than humans. Because this happens so much more with female models, the crop chop is seen as a standard misogynistic choice, or reflex.
Yet: 1) Might the model have preferred such a shot to preserve anonymity?
and: 2) Despite the upsetting connotations, could it still be a good photo?
and: 3) Without knowing the thoughts of the model or photographer, should we think the best or the worst?
